Buddha’s Birthday at R J Donovan

This Spring the inmates at Shared Breath Sangha (a.k.a. R J Donovan Correction Facility) celebrated Buddha’s Birthday with a “Day-Long” retreat. Led by Prison Meditation Project volunteers, on April 30th and May 7th, nearly 80 inmates practiced multiple forms of meditation.

A typical Day-Long retreat consists of:

  • A few Silent Meditation periods
  • Chanting/Sutra practice
  • Qi Gong or Yoga
  • Coffee/Tea Break
  • Metta Meditation (guided)
  • Dharma Talk
  • Mindful Eating Practice with fruit (guided)
  • Poetry reading
  • Lunch cooked by Buddhist nuns
  • Walking Meditation
  • Council Practice
  • Birthday Cake
  • String Ceremony
Many of the men on the inside wait all year for this one day of solid practice.
